Ask most owners about their "web presence" and they point at their website. But a homeowner with a broken AC doesn't just land on your site. They Google your trade, glance at the map pin and the star rating, maybe tap a name to call — and any weak link in that chain quietly loses the job before you ever hear the phone ring. Your web presence is the whole path a stranger takes to reach you, and most of it you've never actually tested.
The good news: you can. Grab your phone and a coffee, set a timer, and in about twenty minutes you can check every piece yourself with free tools — and see exactly where you're leaking work. There are four parts to test, and we'll do them in order.
Minutes 1–5: Score your website
Start with the thing you already own. You're checking two things a hot, impatient customer cares about: how fast it loads and how it feels on a phone. You don't need to be technical — a free health check reads your site the way Google does and hands you the scores in plain English.
Run your site — right now
Type your address and get an instant read on speed, mobile experience, and on-page SEO, straight from Google's own data. This is minute one of the twenty.
Look at the mobile score first — that's what most of your customers see. Green across the board? Good, move on. If speed is red or the mobile score is low, don't panic and don't necessarily rebuild yet: a few fixes often do it. When it's ugly even after the easy fixes, that's your sign to weigh a fresh start — we walk through that call in fix your slow, clunky site — or start over?.
Minutes 5–8: Check your domain
Now the address itself. Two quick questions: is it short, local, and easy to say over the phone — and do you actually own a real one, or are you parked on a builder subdomain like yourname.wixsite.com? A clean .com you own looks legit on a truck; a subdomain reads as temporary and hands trust to the competitor with a real address.
Search the name you'd want and see what's open:
- CedarParkPoolCare.com$12/yrAvailable
- PoolCare.comTaken
- cedarpark.plumbing$45/yrAvailable
Prices are illustrative examples.
If a clean version of your name is open, grab it — it's about the price of a tank of gas a year. If you're not sure what makes a good one, how to pick a domain name that books jobs is the two-minute version. Either way, run yours through the free domain checker before you move on.
Minutes 8–15: Look yourself up on Google
This is where most of the action happens, and where most owners have never actually looked. On your phone, run two searches: "[your trade] near me" and your business name. Then check three things.
Do you show up in the map pack? Those three businesses pinned under the little map get the bulk of the calls. If you're not there, that's your single biggest opportunity — and it's driven mostly by your Google Business Profile and reviews, not your website.
Is your profile complete and current? Tap your listing. Right hours, service area, phone, and a proper set of real photos — or half-empty and last touched two years ago?

How many recent reviews do you have, and have you replied? Count the ones from the last few months. A steady trickle of fresh, replied-to reviews is what tells Google you're active and tells the next customer you're the safe choice. If yours have gone quiet, the easiest fix is to ask on the spot — a printable Review QR card on your counter or in the truck turns a happy customer into a five-star review in ten seconds. The full playbook is in land in Google's map pack.
Minutes 15–20: Make sure they can actually reach you
Last, the silent-leak test — the one that costs the most and hides the longest. On your phone, on your own site:
- Tap your phone number. Does it dial the right number, in one tap, without scrolling? If a customer has to hunt for it, you've lost the impatient ones.
- Submit your own quote form. Fill it out for real and confirm the email lands in your inbox — and check your spam folder. Forms break silently all the time, and every dropped quote is a job handed to someone else.
- Read it like a stranger. In five seconds, is it obvious what you do, where you work, and how to reach you?
A form that quietly stopped sending is the most expensive problem on this whole list, which is why it's worth re-testing on a schedule — the 15-minute website check keeps it honest.
Tally it up — then decide
You've now tested all four: site, domain, Google, and contact. Mark each green, yellow, or red.
- Mostly green? You're ahead of most of your competitors. Keep it tuned and re-run this check now and then.
- A couple of yellows? Those are quick wins — a few reviews, a domain you own, a faster load — that move you up fast.
- Reds across the board? Your presence is leaking jobs, and patching one piece at a time is slow going. Sometimes the fastest fix is a site that has all four handled from the start.
